Since 1924 in New York City at the first conference the emphasis has been on sharing emerging practices and philosophies to improve supply chain management.

Vision

Mission Statement

The UPMG Exists as a professional organization to implement industry-wide programs focused on the education and personal development of its membership, the sharing and development of best practices with a special emphasis on the strategic contribution of the Supply Chain and the support and advancement of the supply chain management profession in accordance with the policies and guidelines established by the Institute for Supply Management.

  • Promote positive customer and supplier relationships based on honesty and fairness
  • Continuously learn and grow both personally and professionally

How does the UPMG carry out its Mission?

The UPMG hosts an annual conference in the fall somewhere in North America. Those involved in supply chain are invited to attend. Additionally the UPMG works with other groups to produce surveys, reports and studies that apply to utility purchasing and related issues.

What happens at the annual conference?

The conference has a "theme" each year and, based on that theme, various discussion areas are presented, such as Economic Outlook, Purchasing Methods, Procedures, Policies, Legislation, Energy and Energy Sources, Materials Management and Management Tools. The conference provides networking opportunities including a Supplier Networking reception similar to a "table-top" display session and other events where the industry is invited to meet.

What is the suppliers’ role in the UPMG?

Through the Supplier Advisory Committee, a working relationship between the UPMG and equipment and service suppliers is encouraged. Membership on the committee is solicited from the suppliers, and is balanced across product lines. Membership rotates on a regular basis in order to vary the input. A committee chairperson is elected with guidance from the UPMG. The supplier committee provides a common meeting ground for everyone involved in supply chain to discuss general procurement issues within a non-commercial environment.

Why should I become involved in the UPMG?

  • The UPMG provides a forum focusing on innovations in purchasing and materials management.
  • The UPMG’s annual conference is an ideal opportunity for discussing/networking on issues, trends, innovations, etc., with colleagues and industry-recognized experts.
  • Serving on the executive committee of the UPMG clearly provides networking opportunities that will benefit member companies in purchasing and supply chain management.
  • Participation in the UPMG is a vehicle toward earning ISM’s Certification for C.P.M. (Certified Purchasing Manager).
